All About Houston!

Bayou Place, located in the Theater District, is Houston's downtown
entertainment complex. |
The
Houston Northwest area is located 20 miles from Houston's central business
district. This unincorporated Harris County region has a sense of community
gained from the unifying link provided by FM 1960. Extensive areas of forested
beauty have made the "1960 Area" one of the most popular residential locations
in the Houston region.
One
of the most attractive features of living in the area to the northwest of
Houston, Texas is that residents here enjoy the benefits of living close to
a dynamic city and can also enjoy the closeness of community that comes from
living in a small town such as such as Tomball, Cypress and Klein and easy
access to recreational areas like Lake Conroe. Many residents of the area are
able to take advantage of the network of freeways and State Highways, along
with the Metropolitan Transit Authority and use the HOV system to quickly and
easily get to their jobs downtown.

Before the 1970's, the "Great Northwest" as some locals like to
call it, was an area of lush woodland and farmland, criss-crossed by Farm
to Market roads. However, since the 1970's the whole area has been the subject
of a phenomenal period of growth and development. The area now features a wide
variety of housing developments, as well as shopping centers, large employers,
such as Compaq Computer Corporation and recreational facilities.
Local public schools have been a strong area attraction. Four
award winning Independent School Districts serve the greater Houston area. To

Sam Houston Race Park |
Numerous cultural, recreational and sports activities are located
in northwest Houston. Major events, facilities and professional sports
teams are found in nearby Houston. In addition, overall lifestyle is enhanced
by the forested beauty and rivers found in the local area. Sam Houston Race
Park recently opened near the southern portion of the area. The Class I
thoroughbred and quarter horse track draws thousands of people from throughout
southeast Texas to its spring, summer, and fall meets.
Golfing and tennis are popular local sporting activities.
Several fine private country club courses are located within the area. Also,
public courses exist at Bear Creek and Cypresswood. The Treeline public course
is found to the north near State Highway 249. The main local country club
courses are Champions, Raveneaux, and Northgate. Each has a prestigious
reputation. Champions Country Club and its associated subdivision is the
pioneering development in Houston's northwest quadrant. In addition to these
courses found within the "1960 Area," the four-course Woodlands complex is
located a short drive to the north.
Among the most popular of today's main events are:
- St.
Patrick's Day Parade - held each March
- Old
Town Spring Crawfish Festival - in April
- Trade Fair - in the spring
- Summer Health Fair - in summer
- and

Local community leaders are planning and working for continuing
growth and quality of life enhancement in the greater Houston northwest
area. Economic development, community infrastructure expansion, crime
awareness, and citizen involvement are the main strategies being undertaken to
accomplish these goals.
